Tame The Web

I recently decided to try some search engine optimization on my site ITxTU.info. It hasn’t really done much yet, but I have a few extra pages indexed in Google now. With the long tail keywords that I targeted, I should start seeing some results in the next month. The other thing that I’m thinking about doing with this site is to offer a contest. I added some code to track referrals, and I believe that getting people to refer their friends to the site will really increase the use and earnings. That’s all I have for now, hopefully I’ll be able to give you something a little better soon.

Sorry for the lack of updates, I’ve been pretty busy and neglected the site. I did get a script up and running that allows you to check your page in google and see where it ranks for a certain keyword, but I ran into one problem. Google checks to make sure that it isn’t being spammed by a virus, and constant queries get flagged as spam, causing the site to get shut down for a while. I have to set up some sort of method to regulate things first, then I will make the site public. I’m wondering if there might be a way to monetize it too, by offering some sort of service to provide a daily report of a site’s rank in Google. I’m thinking that people would gladly pay $.50 - $1.00 to be able to track their site for different keywords. This could be a relatively easy, and lucrative service if I can get the whole process automated. I need to think about it some more and see what I can come up with. Be on the lookout.

As you know, I’m trying to do some major SEO for my site ITxTU.info. I thought it would be a good idea to at least check and see where my site currently ranks in the search engine, so I did a search. With quotes around the keywords “Free SMS Text Message”, I came up on the 18th page of results. Not bad, considering I haven’t done much with it yet. Now, without the quotes. Out of 1,590,000 results, I’m on page 55 and still can’t find my site. This sucks…

I did a quick search, and can’t seem to find a tool that will tell you what page of the search results your site is on in Google, so I was thinking that this might be a nice project to do. I’m sure that many people would find it useful, so I think I’m going to pursue it. Now, should I use a web page for it, or make it a standalone program, or both? That’s the question. I’ll think about it and see what I come up with.

Well, I’ll have to admit that I’m cheating a little bit. I’m hoping that the title is enough to draw you in, because I specifically targeted the keywords “Wordpress SEO”. Why would I do that, you ask? Well, the answer is very simple. I did a little bit of research and found that there isn’t as much competition for that phrase, as opposed to just “SEO” or even “Search Engine Optimization”. It also appeared that there were quite a bit of searches made with that phrase, so hopefully this should get me decent results in the search engines.

Anyway, on to the point of this post. I said that I was going to work on optimizing my text messaging site. Well, I went through and used my keyword list to create an additional 10 pages for the site. They are all duplicates of the index page, but I made some changes to each one, trying to focus on the keywords. This will either work great, or will fail beautifully. No matter what, though, I’ll learn something in the process. I’ll work on it some more over the next few days, then report back on my findings.

I’ve been getting some steady traffic to my free text message site, ITxTU.info, but most of it comes from stumbleupon. Those visitors aren’t very targeted, therefore my earnings aren’t very high. Since the inception of the site, however, I have earned a whopping $6.51 from September 28th. This is only from Adsense, as that’s all the monetization that I have on the site. I was hoping that traffic would increase after redesigning the site, and then adding a fun “Top Txtr’s” list to it. I’m thinking about having a monthly contest, which could hopefully increase the use, resulting in more traffic and Adsense clicks. My first task, however, is to get my site more organic traffic from the search engines. I don’t get any yet, which is a very bad thing. When I search for “Free Text Message” on Google, there are 110,000,000 results. The #1 site, however, is nothing special. It looks like they have about 85 backlinks, as well as keywords all over their page. For a one page site, that’s pretty darn good. My goal is to use that site as an example for my SEO attempt, and see if I can get onto the front page of Google.

My first step was to go into Google Adwords and get all the keywords that popped up when I searched for “Free Text Message”. From that list, I proceeded to make a list of links that I stuck into a link exchange to populate some backlinks out there. I figure that the sheer number of backlinks, along with the use of long tail keywords, should help propel my site onto the front page. That’s not the only thing I’m doing, though, but that’s the first. I figure that it will take time to get those links out anyway, so it’s better to get it done quickly.

My next step is to figure out a way to change the site in order to make use of the long tail keywords. I figure that I should be able to get at least 1 visitor each day, by using each keyword in my list. With these results, I should easily double the traffic to my site within a month. I think that I know how I’m going to do this, too. I plan to create a separate copy of my landing page, using each of the keywords in it. Yes, I will end up with about 40 pages, but they will all have slightly different content. This should help each page get indexed for it’s own keywords, as well as hopefully get my site closer to the top of the list. I also plan to use the keywords in the file name, too. I’m very curious to see if this works, because if so, I’m going to try it out on another site that I have. True, it will be a lot of work, but I think the benefits will be enormous. Only time will tell…

A question was asked on a forum that I frequent regarding the ability to change all links to open a window that shows “You clicked a link that is not part of http://xyz.com domain”. I felt that it was an easy issue to tackle, and created a small script that does this for you. Check it out at this demo page, and download it at this download link.

All you have to do in order to use the script is to insert this code <javascript type=”text/javascript” src=”newwindow.js”></script> between the <head> and </head> tags in your html page. You will also need to copy the 2 files into the same directory as the web page, then you’re done. Edit the php file to show the text that you want, and that’s it. I’m going to start this off with the honest truth.  I’m a programmer, quite competent in PHP, ASP, .Net, HTML, VB, and Javascript.  When it comes to that stuff, I know what I’m doing, but may not exactly know what I’m talking about.  When it comes to design, I’m not that good.  For web SEO, I don’t know much yet.  I’ve done a lot of research on things, but I plan to use this site as an outlet for my case studies as well as providing useful scripts to the public.
